Our story: where art meets ancestral wisdom

Welcome to Original Tribes, a journey into contemporary Indigenous art led by JDHampton. With deep ancestral ties to the Northern Territory and East Kimberley, we honour Country, Elders, and the sacred stories through digital art, photography, design, painting, healing and storytelling. This is more than a brand; it's a lifetime of learning and creating, building a space where art, story, and cultural truth are intertwined.  This work is anchored in specific, sacred soil.  My family connections to Marra Country (family links all the way to Doomagee Queensland) - Mc Arthur River (Borroloola - Great Grandfather), Ngalakan/ Milwaripra country - Roper River (South East Arnhem Land/ Urapunga - Great Grandmother/ Grandfather, and Gurindji country (Wave Hill/ Inverway/ Mistake Creek/ Purnululu East Kimberley - Grandmother). My mother from Marra, Ngalakan/ Milwaripra, Gurindji.  Acknowledgement of 4 Generations of Stolen Generations. And my father from Europe, Germany.   These are not just locations on a map; they are the homelands of my Mother and our ancestors—her lineages are the living pulse within every creation.

Original Tribes is, therefore, an act of continuity. It is how we maintain our belonging across rivers, stone country, and desert sands. Every design, every story shared, is a thread connecting past to present, a way to wear the resilience of the Gurindji Walk-Off, the ancient songlines of the Roper River, and the enduring presence of the Marra people.

We don't just make art; we echo the patterns of our Countries. We don't just tell stories; we speak the truths carried by our Grandmothers and Grandfathers. This is culture lived, not just remembered.  We invite you to wear this story with us. To walk with respect, and in doing so, become part of a narrative that has always been, and will always be: alive, strong, and connected.

This site Original Tribes isn't just a website; it's my digital footprint on Country, a living tribute to our ancestors and a platform for our contemporary Aboriginal voices. This is my personal journey in tech, a First Nations-led digital space built on cultural integrity, sovereign storytelling, and unshakable commitment: https://aboriginalancestors.anat.org.au/

From a borrowed camera to a cultural movement

About Original Tribes & My Journey

My story begins with a borrowed camera and a deep curiosity for Country.

Living in Batchelor—a place of WW2 history, farming, and mining—I spent my days hunting, fishing with family, and learning the land. A borrowed Pentax SLR 35mm from my stepfather started it all. What began as clumsy frames and imperfect moments became a lifelong path of seeing.

Over three decades, that path evolved through every medium I could learn: from film to digital, still images to sound, designing, painting, and storytelling as a tour operator. I became an artist because the stories I carried demanded more than one voice. This journey was deepened by earning a Masters in Cross-Cultural Communication, focusing on breakdowns in Aboriginal health at Charles Darwin University—learning not just to see, but to understand and connect.

Original Tribes is the culmination of those 30 years. It is my digital footprint on Country—a living tribute to our ancestors and a platform for our contemporary Aboriginal voices. Every design, print, and upcoming tour stems from an eye trained by bush light, a mind shaped by cultural truth, and a profound need to get it right.  This is more than a brand. It’s a First Nations–led space where art, story, and cultural integrity are inseparable. It is built on sovereign storytelling and an unshakable commitment to the truth of this land and its people.

Culture isn't a section, it's the fabric

At Original Tribes, culture isn't an addition; it's the very fabric of everything we do. Every line, colour, and symbol in our artwork, whether on a hunting shirt or a mug, comes directly from Country, story, or ceremony. A crocodile isn’t just a graphic; it’s a guardian. River patterns aren’t just decoration; they’re maps of memory. Our apparel and prints carry profound meaning, not just aesthetics—they are wearable respect.

The narratives in our upcoming book and product descriptions are not invented; they are inherited, observed, or earned through relationship. We don't speak about culture; we speak from it. In our way of working, we move at the speed of trust, collaborating, acknowledging, and giving back. Business isn't separate from cultural responsibility; it's an extension of it. Original Tribes doesn't just "incorporate" Indigenous culture; it breathes it.

Connecting to Country, building cultural bridges

Our vision for future Indigenous-led tours and bus trips extends this cultural immersion. These aren't just about "seeing" Country; they're about feeling and listening to it. Led with deep respect, paced with depth, and designed to foster mutual understanding, not just to take photos. We're not merely tour guides; we are cultural bridges, inviting you to engage profoundly with the land and its stories.

From pixel to product, from page to path, every step at Original Tribes is taken with intention, identity, and integrity. This includes our upcoming book, a sneak peek of which you can find on our site, sharing photography and stories that reflect the heart of our mission.

Wear the story. Live the culture.

When you wear our gear or walk with us on tour, we hope you feel the weight and warmth of story—that the design on your shirt carries truth, that the crocodile is a guardian, and that these lines are a language. We hope you understand that culture isn’t history; it’s alive. It’s in the land under your feet, the river you’re looking at, and the voice of the Elder you’re listening to. It’s living, breathing, and still being written.

We hope you walk away knowing that connection isn't a transaction; it's a relationship. When you wear our designs, you're not buying a souvenir; you're wearing a piece of a larger story. When you join a tour, you’re not a tourist; you’re a guest on Country. You leave with a quiet understanding that respect looks like listening and honouring stories. We hope you don’t just learn about culture; we hope you feel its presence and carry that feeling with you—on your back, in your memory, in the way you move through this land from now on.
